“The primary function of Sufism was to fulfill the order of the Prophet ﷺ from the day of the Ghadir Declaration; pledging (spiritual) fealty to the Commander of the Faithful Imam ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib who teaches us to recognize ourselves…after the era of the Twelve Imams, the only line of authority to facilitate this pledge in fulfillment of the order from Ghadir Khum was passed down to Ghawth al-Adham Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani al-Hasani al-Husayni who inherited through Junayd (who was also a descendant of ‘Ali) the mantle of the eleventh Imam of Ahl al-Bayt Hasan al-Askari. He thereby became the greatest teacher in Islam after the Imams, who taught people to recognize themselves. From Ghawth al-Adham these teachings leading to conscious awareness, Ihsan, were passed first to Shihab al-Din Suharwardy and to Shaykh al-Akbar Muhi al-Din Ibn Arabi who was initiated in the Qadiri Order and after him, it passed to the Qutbs of Sufism down to the GrandShaykhs and powerful Awliya of each of these chains, all of whom were tasked with this same responsibility – to collect pledges to Imam ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Manifest Wali and Caliph of the Prophet ﷺ who is tasked with teaching mankind how to recognize themselves. This is both the fulfilling of our covenant from the world of spirits, and is the definition of Abdaal, who are Substitutes to the Divine Authority through this Golden Chain and why outside Sufism, neither Muhaddithin nor Fuqaha, nor anything pertaining to external religion (independent of pledging to ‘Ali to gain conscious awareness) and its practice has Karamat, Mukashifat, Ilham, Nur or Wiliyat. Rather with denial of ‘Ali’s authority it loses its purpose – conscious awareness – and eventually becomes Kharijism, empty without fealty to the Wiliyat which is the only channel to connect us to the teachings of the Seal of Prophets which leads man to recognize himself as the Representative of Allah…Everything depends on this Nisbat (through spiritual fealty)…Where are the Qutb al-Din Mawduds, Ibn Arabis, Moin al-Din Ajmeris and ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilanis of the external sciences (in both Shia and Sunni schools)? They don’t exist because they don’t have (mandatory) fealty to ‘Ali leading to conscious awareness (whereas Sufism does, in the from of baiah leading to Ihsan). These dynasties serve Saheb uz-Zaman ‘alaihi salam. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq said: “It is as though I see the Qaim in the Mosque of Al-Sahlah with his family accompanying him.” –Sayyid Ahmed Amiruddin
