The venerable Imam of the Naqshbandi Way, Khwaja Baha al-Din Shah Naqshband Bukhari (qad) was a descendant of the Golden Chain of Imams from the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet Muhammad (S). His lineage is described as under: Sayyid Baha-ud-din Naqshband Bukhari, son of Sayyid Muhammad Bukhari, son of Sayyid Jalal-ud-din, son of Sayyid Burhan-ud-din, son of Sayyid Abdullah, son of Sayyid Zain al-Abidin, son of Sayyid Qasim, son of Sayyid Sha’aban, son of Sayyid Burhan-un-Din, son of Sayyid Mahmud, son of Sayyid Bulaq, son of Sayyid Taqi Sufi Khilwati, son of Sayyid Fakhr-ur-Din, son of Sayyid ‘Ali Akbar, son of Imam Hasan al-‘Askari, son of Imam ‘Ali al-Hadi, son of Imam Muhammad al-Taqi, son of Imam ‘Ali ibn Musa ar-Ridha, son of Imam Musa al-Kadhim, son of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq, son of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, son of Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin, son of Imam Husayn ibn ‘Ali, son of Imam ‘Ali ibn Abi-Talib.

In addition to the centuries old Sufi traditions tracing the lineage of numerous Sufi Saints by descent to Imam Hasan al-Askari, a narration in the Shiite hadith collection al-Kafi also establishes Abi Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali had relations with other women through whom he had progeny.  According to al-Kafi, in his Usool,  in the chapter of the Birth of Abi Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali:

“When Abi Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali became ill…the Sultan…called certain women with knowledge to deal with pregnancy.  They examined his (Abi Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali [as]) ladies.  A certain woman had said one of the ladies is pregnant.  She was accomodated in a certain quarter…When the pregnancy was proved invalid, they distributed his legacy between his mother and brother” [al-Kafi, by Muhammad Ya’qub Kulayni.  Translated  by Muhammad Sarwar. Chap. 124, Birth of Abi Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali, p.705].
